Mother

My mother passed away earlier this week surrounded by all six of her children and other family members. This is a picture of her with her great-great-granddaughter.
She was the gentlest lady I've ever known.
We all will miss her terribly.

Shadow and the Hungry Moose

This hungry young cow moose has been hanging out in the yard the last few days. Last night she ambled past the kitchen and started eating shoots off the trees behind the house. I was taking pictures of her when Shadow brushed past me and out his dog door in to his dog run. The first picture is the moose's reaction. Very quickly she recognized Shadow wasn't a threat and went back eating more or less unconcerned. She did keep and eye on him and he watched her for a little bit before doing his business and going back inside.

Weather

I checked the temperature this morning. The prediction was -20 to -25. Past history tells me my thermometer goes off line at -23. So it was Damn cold. It's "warmed" up to -16 here by noon. After the first half of the winter featuring record snow falls we are now starting our usual January weather. The current long range predictions are for the sub zero temps to last until at least the end of the month.

About the Foxes...

In an earlier post I suggested that foxes were the likely preditors of my daughter's chickens. Well, maybe. But this weekend I was looking around in the woods 20 yards east of my garage at found what appears to be relatively fresh bear scat. I'm guessing a black bear by the size. Also there were no little bells in it and it didn't smell like pepper spray.

Kenai River Reds

I did my usual 2 weeks on the Kenai River fishing for Reds. It was a record breaking year for the red run. I limited every single day with my fly rod, usually in less than an hour, even after they raised the limit to 6 fish daily. Family and friends were equally successful dip netting at the mouth of the river. I probably filleted 120 fish in the 2 weeks. I broke 2 cheap flyrods and stripped the drag out of  2 equally cheap reels. So I finally invested in better equipment. I lot of sticker shock! I did a lot of sitting around in the sunshine with my old dog sleeping at my feet.
